Proprioception

Proprioception

1. Explain the purpose to the client:

Hello Matilda, sometimes after an injury patients experience loss of proprioception, or the ability to know where the position of your body/limbs are in space when not moving.

2. Explain the procedure to the client:

Matilda, I am going to hold your arm and move your arm in flexion and extension. If you feel any pain or you feel uncomfortable throughout the test please let me know right away.

3. Hold the lateral portion of the clients upper extremity and move the arm in flexion and extension, be sure to say flexion (when in flexion) and extension (when in extension) out loud so the patient understands the difference. (Less involved side)

4. Ask client to close their eyes.

Matilda, please close your eyes.

5. Place the clients upper extremity in either a flexion or extension position. Ask the clients to identify if the upper extremity is in a flexed or extended position. (More involved side)

Matilda, please tell me if your arm is in the flexed or extended position.
