Kinesthesia

Kinesthesia

1. Explain the purpose to the client:

Hello Matilda, sometimes after an injury patients experience loss of kinesthesia, or the sense that detects weight and movement of the body.

2. Explain the procedure to the client:

Matilda, I am going to hold your arm and move your arm in flexion and extension. If you feel any pain or you feel uncomfortable throughout the test please let me know right away.

3. Hold the lateral portion of the clients upper extremity and move the arm in flexion and extension, be sure to say flexion (when in flexion) and extension (when in extension) out loud so the patient understands the difference. (Less involved side) (This is a continuous movement)

4. Ask client to close their eyes.

Matilda, please close your eyes.

5. Passively move the clients upper extremity towards flexion or extension. Ask the client to identify the movement of the upper extremity. (More involved side)

Matilda, please tell me if your arm is moving towards the flexed position or the extended position.
